LibrePhone Project

The Free Software Foundation has announced a new project called LibrePhone:

Current information suggests it is an effort focused on reverse-engineering some of the binary blobs which stay in the way of using phones with only libre software[1], likely implying the Replicant-compatible devices.

Well, that’s going to be a little confusing, what with the Purism Librem 5 phone already as a product. But of course, it’s a great project. People will call it the LibraPhone, and will wonder how it scales.

A campaign has been initiated by the FSF:

Documentation:

Looks like their current strategy is to target LineageOS devices, reuse their Python scripts to analyze which devices have the smallest binary blob filesize, then focus on reverse-engineering those binary blobs first.

Hi Frank - can the OS of the Librephone do a side load of Android Apps (used esp for BC Government stuff.)

The LibrePhone Project targets mobile devices that are capable of using custom ROMs, so side-loading APKs should be easily possible.

I wonder impact the Jolla Project (sorry new users can’t add link the post but their site is jolla dot com) will have.

None, Jolla is not interested in reverse engineering proprietary blobs from mobile devices.
